The Alchemist:

http://justbreatheaspiritualjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/the-alchemist.pdf

It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting, he thought, as
he looked again at the position of the sun, and hurried his pace. He had suddenly
remembered that, in Tarifa, there was an old woman who interpreted dreams.

having a dream come true:

英文有 the possibility of having a dream come true...還有an old woman who interpreted dreams.

(makes life interesting.

In praise of procrastination:

http://www.economist.com/node/21558218
http://www.chinaenglish.com.cn/html/c76/2012-07/47790.html

http://freebies.about.com/od/onlinegames/tp/time-wasters.htm

有时拖延事情是有道理的:the silliest impositions on our time occasionally have the decency to self-combust(这句实在无能为力了)。

Mr Partnoy argues that people need to learn how to manage delay just as they learn how to manage everything else. Sometimes putting things off makes sense: the silliest impositions on our time occasionally have the decency to self-combust. Still, the rules of sensible time-management apply to procrastinators as much as everyone else. Don't delay tackling problems that will grow worse if ignored, such as your credit-card bill. And create a to-do list to fool yourself into doing your second-most-important job while procrastinating over the most important one.

the silliest impositions on our time occasionally have the decency to self-combust.

Become too obsessed with deadlines and you are left with the intellectual equivalent of fast food—and toenails that need cutting.

THERE is nothing like a deadline to focus the mind. This columnist finds that, whenever his editor starts yapping, his mind focuses on the following subjects. (1) His toenails. Surely they need to be cut?

-------------------

Delay even works in fields where time might seem to be of the essence. Doctors and pilots can profit from following a checklist, even when doing things they have done many times before. A list slows them down and makes them more methodical, as Atul Gawande describes in “The Checklist Manifesto”. The best sportsmen wait until the last split second before hitting the ball.

Thinking, Fast and Slow:

[Figure 1] Your experience as you look at the woman’s face seamlessly combines what we normally call seeing and intuitive thinking. As surely and quickly as you saw that the young woman’s hair is dark, you knew she is angry. Furthermore, what you saw extended into the future. You sensed that this woman is about to say some very unkind words, probably in a loud and strident voice. A premonition of what she was going to do next came to mind automatically and effortlessly. You did not intend to assess her mood or to anticipate what she might do, and your reaction to the picture did not have the feel of something you did. It just happened to you.

You did not intend to assess her mood or to anticipate what she might do, and your reaction to the picture did not have the feel of something you did.

You did not intend to do X , and Y did not have the feel of something you did ( intend
Xassess her mood or to anticipate
Y your reaction to the picture

did not have the feel of something that  you did-  you  intended

JS)

揣摩 sounds more like trying to please her.(他寫道)

" You knew immediately that this is a multiplication problem, and probably knew that you could solve it, with paper and pencil, if not without.”

You knew that(X) and probably  knew that (Y)

X=this is a multiplication problem
Y=you could solve it, with paper and pencil, if not without

if not without --
If you could not solve it without paper and pencil

把 if not without 放到前面來看:

If you could not solve it without paper and pencil, you could solve it with paper and pencil.

I never go to bed past 11pm. EVER: Do you ever go to bed past 11pm?
I never go out on weekends.

http://www.readingrockets.org/books/interviews/shannon/

http://www.readingrockets.org/books/interviews/shannon/transcript/

Oh, I hate lima beans. And I think most kids do. That was actually the last thing that changed in that story. Originally, the cure was marshmallows, just because they're yummy. She just ate something because it was yummy, and it cured her. Then my editor and I were discussing the ending, and we decided it would work better if we could come up with something that most people hated, but that she liked. That would be a more effective ending for the story.
So, I thought, you know, "Lima beans, of course." For kids, that's the international symbol of food hatred – lima beans. So I called my editor and told her. She said, "Well, why lima beans?"
I said, "Because everybody hates them."
And she said, "They do?"
It turned out that she'd always loved lima beans her whole life and had no idea that kids couldn't stand them. She didn't believe me. So she took a poll around the office, and called back and said, "Okay. You're right. Everyone hates them."

And, as we all know, the Japanese will commit suicide at the drop of a hat. The other day I read that a young Japanese man killed himself because he had failed his university entrance exams."

at the drop of a hat:

immediately; instantly; on the slightest signal or urging. (Alludes to the dropping of a hat as a signal.) John was always ready to go fishing at the drop of a hat. If you need help, just call on me. I can come at the drop of a hat.
