最近洪蘭翻譯的“快思慢想”在網路引起討論。批聲沸沸揚揚！ 我沒有興趣做人身攻擊，只想看看原文的意思，和翻譯合不合。

讀讀批的人在批些什麼？

結果，竟然連批的人，也沒看清楚原文的意思，這就有意思了！

我用出聲思考的方式，來檢查一下：

當你在看這個女人的面孔時，它其實包含了我們一般稱之為看（seeing）和直覺思考的兩個歷程。你馬上注意到這個年輕女子的頭髮是黑色的，她在生氣，此外，你所看到的東西延伸到未來，你感覺到這個女人馬上要說一些不好的話，可能用很嚴厲的話大聲罵人，她未來要做些什麼是很自動、毫不費力地進入你的心中。你並不想知道她的心情是怎樣或是預期她要做什麼，而且你對照片的反應並不是你做了什麼她才這樣。你的感覺就這麼產生了，這就是快速思考的一個例子。

出聲思考：而且你對照片的反應並不是你做了什麼她才這樣，當然不可能，我跟她不認識，我怎麼可能想我做了什麼惹了她？？？莫名其妙！

找到原文：

[Figure 1] Your experience as you look at the woman’s face seamlessly combines what we normally call seeing and intuitive thinking. As surely and quickly as you saw that the young woman’s hair is dark, you knew she is angry. Furthermore, what you saw extended into the future. You sensed that this woman is about to say some very unkind words, probably in a loud and strident voice. A premonition of what she was going to do next came to mind automatically and effortlessly. You did not intend to assess her mood or to anticipate what she might do, and your reaction to the picture did not have the feel of something you did. It just happened to you.

該網站批評洪蘭翻譯，提出的建議：

你 並未刻意去探知 她心情怎樣或是預期她要做什麼，而且你對照片有怎樣的反應，感覺上也不是因為你做了什麼 使然 ，你的 反應 就這麼自然而然發生了。

出聲思考： 還是不對，跟我做了什麼有啥關係呢？

這一句：

You did not intend to assess her mood or to anticipate what she might do, and your reaction to the picture did not have the feel of something you did.

You did not intend to do X , and Y did not have the feel of something you did (指 intend 前面提到的動詞）

X＝assess her mood or to anticipate

Y＝ your reaction to the picture 

你並不想知道她的心情是怎樣或是預期她要做什麼，而且你對照片的反應也不是你刻意想知道。

did not have the feel of something that  you did-  you  intended

我把我的詮釋給蘇正隆，蘇先生（JS）看看：您可能不知道：

蘇正隆先生，擅長咬文嚼字，對英文的掌握，對中文的拿捏特別敏感，我說這是acquired taste 還是天生就會？非常佩服！

他看了這句：你並不想知道她的心情是怎樣或是預期她要做什麼，而且你對照片的反應也不是你刻意想知道。

馬上有了回應：

(你沒刻意去揣摩她的心情或預測她會做什麼，你對照片的反應也不是刻意的。JS)

不多久，他又改版了，天才的頭腦，是不斷思考的，太棒了！

揣摩 sounds more like trying to please her.（他寫道）

揣摩 －－ 和 －－揣測 －－ 

預測 －－和  －－ 預期 －－

這細微的差異，你能分辨嗎？品酒的功力如何培養？acquired taste... 還是天生？跟蘇先生磨翻譯，像品酒一樣，是人生一大樂事！

我還要說的是，中英文交叉比對，兩種語言的敏感度都大大提升－閱讀力大雙贏，－真的太好玩了！

 另一則有爭議的翻譯：

「你立刻知道這是一個乘法的問題，如果你有紙和筆的話你會算算看。如果沒有紙筆的話，你就不會做，因為你知道自己的心算能力。你同時也知道這個答案的範圍，你馬上知道 12609 和 123 都是不對的答案。但是假如你沒有花時間算它，就不確定答案是不是 568。」

出聲思考：如果沒有紙筆，就不會算。作者怎知我的心算能力？
 不相信作者會這麼武斷。

我們無意做人身攻擊，我們只想看清楚原文的意思！貓頭鷹英文共讀會已經常常做這類練習：訓練思考力！

回到原文：

" You knew immediately that this is a multiplication problem, and probably knew that you could solve it, with paper and pencil, if not without.”

上面的句子可以簡化來看：

You knew that（X） and probably  knew that （Y）

X=this is a multiplication problem

Y=you could solve it, with paper and pencil, if not without

    

if not without --

If you could not solve it without paper and pencil

把 if not without 放到前面來看：

If you could not solve it without paper and pencil, you could solve it with paper and pencil.

如果你沒有辦法用心算，你也可以用紙筆算出來。
